Ingredients

Every ingredient in the bag, why we picked it, and every 'healthy' substitute we deliberately said no to.

The list

Six kinds of ingredients.

01

Nuts

Almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews, and hazelnuts. The base of every flavor. What changes flavor to flavor is which nuts get emphasised: pecans in Texas Heat and Spiced Apple Pie, cashews in Raspberry White Chocolate, hazelnuts in Dark Chocolate Cherry.

02

Seeds

Pumpkin, sunflower, flax, and chia. Small in volume, big in nutrition. Every serving carries omega-3s from the flax and chia and magnesium and zinc from the pumpkin.

03

Coconut

Unsweetened coconut chips only. No syrups, no coconut sugar, no toasted-in-oil versions. The chips crisp up with the nuts and add texture without changing the sugar count.

04

Egg whites

The binder. Egg whites are what cluster the nuts and seeds without needing added sugar, syrup, or oil to do the same job. That is why the clusters hold together and the panel reads the way it does.

05

Real fruit

Freeze-dried raspberries in Raspberry White Chocolate, and freeze-dried cherries in Dark Chocolate Cherry. Nothing added; the sugar in them is what the fruit has, in the amount the fruit has it.

06

Spices

Every seasoned flavor uses a spice blend built for it. Texas Heat has chili, cayenne, garlic, paprika, and onion. Spiced Apple Pie has cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, and allspice. Vanilla Pumpkin Spice has its own warm blend.

What sweetens the bag

Three sources of sweetness.

01

Stevia

The only thing sweetening the base. Measured in drops per batch, because a hint of sweetness is all you need. Most stevia products taste bitter because they use too much of it trying to compete with commercial snacks' sugar loads.

02

Monk fruit

Only inside the chocolate on the three chocolate flavors. About 200 times sweeter than sugar, and no calories or carbs. The chocolate is a real, no-added-sugar bar sweetened with monk fruit rather than a sugar alcohol.

03

Real fruit

Freeze-dried raspberries and cherries. Nothing added; the sugar in them is what the fruit naturally has, in the amount it naturally has it. About 1g of total sugar per serving comes from this and the nuts themselves.

What we don't use

And the "healthy" sweeteners we said no to.

Some of these get sold as better-for-you. They are still sugar, or they cause the problems we built CrunchCraft to avoid.

Honey
Molecularly still sugar. About 40% fructose, which has been linked to liver and metabolic disease. Trace minerals do not change what it does to blood sugar.
Coconut sugar
Very close in composition to table sugar. Marketed as healthy because it contains a small amount of fiber, but that fiber does not offset the sugar.
Maple syrup
Sugar with a small amount of minerals. No fibre to slow digestion, and easy to over-pour because it does not measure like a granulated sweetener.
Date sugar
Whole dried fruit ground into powder. Slightly less refined than coconut sugar and includes some fibre, but still a digestible sugar that raises blood glucose.
Sugar alcohols
Erythritol, sorbitol, maltitol, xylitol. Anything ending in ‑itol. Common in keto and paleo snacks; often cause a cloying aftertaste and digestive distress.
Sucralose, aspartame, ace-K
Artificial sweeteners. Not sweeteners our own bodies evolved with, and not on our ingredient list.

Not in the bag

What is deliberately not in the bag.

  • Added sugar
  • Sugar alcohols
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Seed oils
